Philip Gilbert Hamerton was an English artist, critic, and author, perhaps best known for writing The Intellectual Life. Born in Lancashire, his mother died in childbirth, and Hamerton was raised by aunts. Although prepared for Oxford, he eschewed higher education, and studied painting, specializing in landscapes.
